Our story

You find your life boring? You want something different? But don’t know how?
So did we – and then we chose to change it and became professionals in housesitting.

Introduction in housesitting

We are Sandra and Stefan

and we don’t live a regular life because I don’t consider professional housesitting as “normal”. We are Germans who left their country of origin in 2009 to start a new life in New Zealand, on the other side of the planet… We left our 9to5 jobs as IT Consultant and IT Projectmanager and wanted to reinvent ourselves in NZ.

We needed a new start because “the old world” made us sick and we just could help ourselves by leaving everything behind (after a lot of different life changes in Germany like new jobs, new apartment, new whatever).

A few months after our arrival in NZ I (Stefan) got a job in IT and everything was fine. New job, totally new surroundings, new people, new friends, new hobbies, new food, new country, new everything… We were ticking along, happy, lived close to the beach of the South Pacific, had a lemon tree…

Sandra worked as an IT Consultant for 1 day, never went back, and opened her own business, Meditation Tauranga. She got clients, created amazing meditation groups and could help hundreds with stress and anxiety issues and much more. She also taught (still does) Feng Shui and helps people with their houses and businesses with the wisdom of this very old Chinese framework.

After 6 years in the country we even got eligible to apply for NZ citizenship. After sorting out our German citizenship we applied and now have dual citizenship in Germany (and Europe) and NZ (and Australia). ALL FINE…  Well…  Something still felt odd… We couldn’t “grab it”. Some weird gut feeling which is hard to describe…

Somewhen in 2016 a headhunter from Melbourne called me. There is a very interesting IT project in Hobart, Tasmania, and he would like to bring my CV forward… It felt great but at this stage it was impossible because my project at this time was in the middle of the rollout phase and I couldn’t leave it (that’s a German thing… we’re very loyal to our Employers and we feel a high responsibility for what we do…).

But the telephone call started something… We could pin down the weird gut feeling… It was “stuckness”… We moved around the globe and we’re still doing the same stuff as in Germany. Ok, we live now in the best country of the world, the beach is over the road (at this time we rented an apartment right at the beach), we have AWESOME friends, and and and …

BUT…  We felt stuck…  That’s it … sh…  AGAIN???  Nope, different stuck … Maybe it had something to do with the fact that both of us turned 50 in this year…  Anyway …

We opened our minds for new and different opportunities. My contract ended in August and we started making plans for the next phase…

First thing was holiday, back to Germany for a long visit to family and friends. Then to Australia, checking out the job market… Melbourne is our favourite city… why not… If Hobart has cool IT projects there should be minimum one in Melbourne as well…

And again … Well …

Life sent me a wake-up call…

We were packing our stuff to move into a storage, and it was during that where I got a weird chest pain (it was a Sunday). I thought it’s just a cramp because of carrying the heavy boxes, packing stuff, steps up and down … I took a few Magnesium, meditated and everything was fine… Next box … Easy as …

Just to be sure, I called a friend (ok, after Sandra told me off) who is a GP and she told me to go to the hospital… Just in case … Com’on … I feel good, no way …  Ok, go to your GP tomorrow … Yes, will do, after the important meeting in the morning …

Ok, I went to the GP. She checked everything, made an ECG, checked me again … Everything fine. Just the pressure on the chest felt odd. One last thing … take this spray, under your tongue and tell me what’s going on … Sweet … no pressure on my chest anymore … Thanks doc, I’ll get the meeting at 1pm …

No, you won’t … I call the ambulance … You had a HEART ATTACK …

WHAT !!!!

It was a Nitro spray which opens the arteries and the symptoms I showed were clear as mud… After a blood test at the hospital it was evident I have had a heart attack, 110% sure!!!

I needed surgery as soon as possible because minimum one of my arteries was blocked … Awesome … NOT!!!

Two days later I got a stent (his name is “Fritz”, and yes it’s a he). During the surgery (I was awake and could follow everything on BIIG screens) they checked all arteries and it was just one that was blocked, the rest was/is pristine. Nobody could tell me why it happened (stress is no official heart attack risk in NZ, they just go with overweight, diabetes, smoking, etc. and I am none of that).

I meditated A LOT in these 3 days. Something told me that I should slow down everything in my body. After a few follow-up examinations the GP told me that these meditations (incl. the meditation right after the heart attack) saved my life and reduced the damage of the heart down to next to nothing.

So, how did this episode lead to our current lifestyle???

As I left the hospital, we had no apartment anymore. We housesitted for friends who were in Germany and another house sit until our flight to Germany. That’s how we got a taste of housesitting.

The idea was born !!!

On our way back from Germany we only went back as far as Melbourne and started housesitting in Australia (as NZ citizen you can live and work in Australia as well as the other way around). The original plan was to house sitting as a start, I look for a job and we’ll get a house and live in Melbourne…

In the end that was the wrong plan …

I managed to create two job offers. One as a Project Manager for the implementation of a HR and Payroll system at a big organisation in Melbourne (REALLY good daily rate) and one from a German online portal (15 hrs per week, paid in Euros)…

What do you think??

Sandra and I had a 5-minute discussion…

And???

I took the offer from the German online portal. I decided to not go back to 9to5. Everything felt odd about this (especially after we did a campervan relocation from Cairns to Melbourne, I have not felt so free in a long time).

Well …

That was in late 2016. Since then we’re housesitting, built up our own online company/academy, and sometimes I do some short-term contracts as Business Analyst and/or Project Manager. Our stuff is in storage since 30/06/2016 and we live out of a suitcase. Jumping between housesits, islands and continents is soooo much more fun than living in one place and doing 9to5 …

This is what we call FREEDOM

My health???

It’s unbelievably good…

We changed our diets to our own sort of Paleo and Keto. I lost about 12 kg. My breath is great (one of the warning signs of an heart attack is short breath similar to the beginning of a cold/flu). And our “borrowed” pets keep me busy with walking …

ALL GOOD!!!

We learned heaps of new stuff like all the internet things, social media, internet marketing, etc. but especially we learned to trust our gut feelings and have trust in us and our future.

And we learned that REAL friends are not easy to find, but we now have a wonderful bunch of them and we love them ALL  !!!
